Memorial And Museum: The Indianapolis
Firefighters Museum and Fallen Firefighters
Memorial is housed in old Fire Station #2. It was
in service from 1871 until 1929. The station was
one of four identical structures built in the
late 1870's and was, for its time, the state of
the art in fire house design. It remains the
oldest fire station in Marion County and the only
one of the four 1870 structures still standing.
It currently houses turn of the century horse and
drawn apparatus on loan from the Indianapolis
Motor Speedway, courtesy of the Hulman family.
The Memorial is
located in front the Firefighter Memorial And
Museum The names of the 75 Marion County
Firefighters that have made the supreme sacrifice
are engraved on descending columns. The columns
spiral toward the mythological bird 'Phoenix',
rising from the ashes symbolizing life renewed.
Phase
three of the museum is currently under
construction. Plans are to open it during Fire
Prevention Week 1997.

Safetyville is an interactive village designed to
teach children about personal safety and injury
prevention. The concept is based upon the premis
that through their own involvement children can
learn safety awareness and preventative
procedures.
Unintentional
injury is the leading cause of death and
disability to children under age 14. These
injuries can be prevented through proper safety
practices such as seat belts, bicycle helmets and
pads, safe street crossing behavior and home
safety awareness. The children attending
Safetyville learn and practice safety procedures
in the nine major injury risk areas.
The
Safetyville program is designed for children in
kindergarten through the second grade. It is
located in the same building as the Firefighters
Survive Alive Village.
